Categories Do Not Merge When Values Are Recoded

In many programs, such as R and SPSS, categories are merged by recoding their Values. For example, if you wanted to merge 18 to 24 (3) to 25 to 34 (4) you would replace all the 4s in a variable with 3s and this would cause the categories to be merged. This is not how Q works. Instead, in Q, merging is principally done by dragging and dropping (see How To Merge Categories). Furthermore, modifying the values in a Question's Value Attributes will not cause the categories to merge (unless making a linked copy).
